Pothos

Epipremnum aureum

Pothos, also known as Devil's Ivy, is one of the easiest houseplants to grow. With cascading vines of heart-shaped leaves, it's perfect for beginners and thrives in various conditions. Nearly impossible to kill!

Growth: fast
↕Size: 2-3 meters trailing

Care Instructions

Watering

Once every 1-2 weeks

Water when top inch of soil is dry. Pothos is forgiving and can tolerate occasional neglect. Leaves will droop when thirsty. Better to underwater than overwater.

Light

Low to bright, indirect light

Extremely adaptable! Grows in low light (slower growth) to bright indirect light (faster growth). Avoid direct sun which causes leaf burn. Variegated varieties need more light to maintain patterns.

Soil

Standard potting soil

Any well-draining potting mix works well. Not fussy about soil. Ensure pot has drainage holes to prevent root rot.

Temperature

18-29°C (65-85°F)

Humidity

Average household humidity (40-60%)

Fertilizing

Every 4-6 weeks during growing season

Feed with diluted balanced fertilizer every 4-6 weeks in spring and summer. Can survive without fertilizer but grows faster with it.

Common Problems & Solutions

Yellow leaves

Cause: Overwatering

Solution: Let soil dry out more between waterings. Check drainage.

Brown leaf tips

Cause: Tap water chemicals or low humidity

Solution: Use filtered water or let tap water sit 24 hours. Mist occasionally.

Leggy growth

Cause: Insufficient light

Solution: Move to brighter location. Prune to encourage bushier growth.

Pale or faded leaves

Cause: Too much direct sunlight

Solution: Move away from direct sun to bright indirect light.

Slow growth

Cause: Lack of nutrients or light

Solution: Fertilize regularly and increase light exposure.
