Crassula ovata
The Jade Plant is a classic succulent with thick, glossy leaves and tree-like growth. Known as the "Money Tree" in feng shui, it can live for decades with minimal care and may even bloom with proper care.
Every 2-3 weeks
Water deeply but infrequently. Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter to once monthly. Wrinkled leaves indicate underwatering. Yellow, mushy leaves signal overwatering.
Bright, direct light
Needs bright light with several hours of direct sun daily. South or west-facing window is ideal. Insufficient light causes leggy growth and leaf drop. Red edges on leaves indicate good light.
Cactus or succulent mix
Use fast-draining cactus/succulent soil. Add extra perlite or sand. Excellent drainage is essential. Jade plants can stay in same pot for years - they like being rootbound.
18-24°C (65-75°F)
Low humidity (30-50%)
Every 2-3 months during growing season
Feed sparingly 2-3 times in spring/summer with diluted succulent fertilizer. Over-fertilizing causes leggy growth. Can thrive without fertilizer but grows slower.
Cause: Overwatering, underwatering, or environmental stress
Solution: Check soil moisture. Water only when completely dry. Avoid moving plant or temperature fluctuations.
Cause: Underwatering
Solution: Water thoroughly. Leaves will plump up. Don't let plant stay dry too long.
Cause: Overwatering or root rot
Solution: Let soil dry completely. Check roots. Remove rotted roots and repot in fresh, dry soil.
Cause: Insufficient light
Solution: Move to location with more direct sun. Prune leggy stems to encourage bushier growth.
Cause: Sunburn or salt buildup from over-fertilizing
Solution: Acclimate to bright light gradually. Reduce fertilizer. Flush soil with water.
